06-01-2013: United States Naval Academy Distinguished Graduate!
Keegan Albi joined the Greystone Team August 2008. We knew instantly we had a SUPER STAR on the team. His attitude, character and integrity motivated his peers.. Keegan's athletic ability inspired his team to work harder. He became an academic power house assisting those who needed extra help.
Keegan EARNED his appointment to USNA. May of 2010, Keegan climbed Herndon in record time! He majored in International Relations/Japanese. Thus allowing him to spend a quite a bit of time studying abroad in Japan as an exchange student.
Keegan graduated from USNA as a Distinguished Graduate - top 10% of his class!
CONGRATULATIONS, Keegan Albi! We are very proud of you and your accomplishments!

05-30-2013: Plebes No More!
Last week, the USNA Class of 2016 completed their last challenge as plebes - climbing the Herndon monument to replace the "dixie cup" plebe hat with an upperclassman's cover. Although the monument is only 21 feet tall, the task of reaching the top can take hours. This is due to the fact that upperclassmen cover the entire monument with lard. In order to actually reach the top, the plebes build a human pyramid around the monument. Alone, conquering Herndon would be impossible, but as a team, the job always gets done.
There to celebrate with midshipmen from the Greystone Class of 2012 were Dave and Brenda Bailey. After conquering Herndon, all Greystoners were invited to a "Plebes No More" dinner at Galway Bay where the idea of Greystone was initially formed! The Baileys had the opportunity to hear about the plebe experience from those who had just completed it and there was a common thread through all of the conversations - the Greystoners didn't just get through their first year, they excelled! And when asked what made the difference, the answer was simply "the year of prep at Greystone". In their year at Schreiner, Greystoners learn how to manage their time effectively, how to study at the university level, and how to rely on your teammates for help. These are all skills that serve them well at the academies because at Greystone, we're not just interested in getting you to the academy, we want to get you through the academy and beyond.

05-30-2013: Greystone Class of 2013 Completes the Program Setting New Records!
Completing a year at Greystone is not an easy task. Students who join the Greystone team are pushed to their limits athletically and academically all the while being challenged to maintain high moral standards. The Class of 2013 embraced these challenges and as a result, excelled through the year! Academically, the Class of 2013 set the bar high for future Greystoners by earning a class average GPA of 3.81 in the fall semester and a 3.74 in the spring. They set a new record athletically in the number of students who "maxed out" on events in the CFA and PFT. And as a team, they were able to take control of their time here at Greystone to become effective leaders on the Schreiner campus and in the Kerrville community. Each Greystoner grew tremendously this year and should look back on their experience knowing that they can be successful in any endeavor due to the hard work that they put in to the program. Congratulations, Greystone Class of 2013! You are equipped with knowledge, skills, and determination that will serve you well for the rest of your life. You have much to proud of and we look forward to hearing about all of your accomplishments in the future!

05-28-2013: Congratulations to All New Falcon Foundation Scholars!
By now you have probably gone through a wide range of emotions in the past few weeks spanning from disappointed to hopeful as you plan out your future. This can be an incredibly confusing time as you determine what your next step will be, but rest assured that there are great options waiting for you. Greystone has a proven track record which includes 100% of our Falcon Foundation Scholars earning their appointments to the Air Force Academy. Greystone is also the only academy prep program associated with a four-year university. Our students have been able to take the actual courses that they will see in their Doolie year and get a leg up on their classmates once they’re at the academy. Each of the Falcon Scholars has been inducted into Alpha Lambda Delta, a freshman academic honor society reserved for students in the top 20% of their class. Howlett Cohick, the Executive Officer for the Greystone Class of 2013 earned a perfect 4.0 in the fall semester and is on track to do the same in the spring. Zach Eppinger, squad leader for Squad III finished the fall semester with a 3.94 GPA. And our two Jeff’s – Jeffrey Puhek and Jeffery Walton both also finished in the fall with a perfect 4.0. As the Academic Coordinator, Jeff Puhek was able to help his fellow classmates when they struggled with their classes. And Jeffery Walton served as both the logistics officer and section leader providing structure and organization to the class. Here at Greystone, the Falcon Foundation Scholars have had the opportunity to excel as leaders and scholars. If you are interested in accepting the challenge, we encourage you to complete the Greystone/Schreiner application and join our team for the Greystone Class of 2014! For any questions, give the office a call at 830-896-6530.

04-22-2013: The Post-9/11 GI Bill
The Post-9/11 GI Bill offers very generous academic financial support for individuals with at least 90 days of aggregate service after 10 September 2001 or individuals discharged with a service connected disability after 30 days. Approved training under the Post-9/11 GI Bill includes undergraduate education and this benefit allows career service members the opportunity to share their education benefits with immediate family members.
Through the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon program, Schreiner University has voluntarily entered into contract with the VA and has agreed to share the total cost of tuition. Under the Yellow Ribbon program, those who qualify also receive a Basic Allowance for Housing (BAH) which is intended to be applied toward the cost for room and board. Additionally, candidates receive a stipend for books.
Cost break down for a fully qualified service member (maximum coverage) of the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon Program:
Schreiner University (two semesters, 19 credit hours per semester)
Tuition $21,884
Room $ 4,938
Board $ 4,870
Fees $ 600
Total $32,292Post-9/11 Yellow Ribbon Program
VA Contribution Schreiner Contribution Total
Tuition $18,077 $4,507 $22,584
Room $8,280 (BAH for 8 months*) $ 8,280
Board Included from above
Fees (not covered)
Book Stipend $1,000 $ 1,000
Total $31,864Based upon the calculations above, participation in the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon program will mean that all costs for tuition, room and board are fully covered. Use of the Post-9/11 GI Bill Yellow Ribbon benefit not only ensures that an academy candidate will receive a true academy-level academic experience through Schreiner University, but also receive the most dynamic academy prep program in the country through Greystone – at no additional cost!
*Note: Local BAH is $1,035 per month. For the 8 full months of the Greystone program, the family will receive approximately $8,280.00. These funds are paid directly to the family on a monthly basis. Each family will establish a monthly payment plan through the Schreiner University business office to transfer appropriate funds to cover the costs of a candidate’s room and board.

04-22-2013: Ending on a High Note
As usual, this week has been incredibly busy at Greystone causing the days to go by a little too quickly. However, Friday has given us the chance to stop and take a look around as we celebrate some good news with our students. We found out today that Joao Bermudez will be at the United States Military Academy Prep School (USMAPS) next year, following in the footsteps of former Greystoner Eddie Ortega (Class of 2010)! Claire Clark received an appointment to the Coast Guard Academy! The first Coast Guard appointment for the class of 2013. And all five of our Naval Academy Foundation sponsored students have received official word that they will be joining the USNA Class of 2017! Congratulations Evan Hovenden, Erin Thamm, Joe Puza, Vicky Reyes, and Shannon Brown! All seven of these students have worked incredibly hard to get to this point and they have much to be proud of! We cannot wait to see all that you accomplish in the future.

04-02-2013: Greystone Pistol Team
As future military officers, the Greystone students understand that using firearms will be a part of their career training at the academies. To help them get prepared Greystone offers the students an opportunity to become familiar with a variety of guns at the Hill Country Shooting Sports Center. The HCSSC is an official US Olympic Training Center for shooting sports and is designed to support training for shotgun, rifle, and pistol shooting. This year, a group of Greystone students have put together an official Pistol Team that participates in shooting competitions all around the Texas Hill Country. On Friday afternoons, team members spend hours at the shooting range learning proper technique for accurate shooting in both static and dynamic situations. Having this training experience will put the Greystoners ahead of their classmates at the academies who have never handled a firearm before and give them the chance to be a leader among leaders. If you are interested in supporting the Pistol Team please give the Greystone Office a call at 830-896-6530.

03-27-2013: FUNraising for Wounded Warrior Project
Although Greystone students are a focused group of scholars, athletes, and leaders, they also know how to have a little fun. The Class of 2013 has decided to invite the rest of Schreiner University to join in on their fun. On April 6th the Greystoners are hosting a Blacklight Formal in Schreiner University's Cailloux Campus Activity Center. The evening will be full of blacklights, glow sticks, and good music. Neon colors are encouraged! Tickets go on sale for $5 on Monday, 1 April and will continue until Friday, 5 April. You can also buy tickets at the door for $7. A portion of each ticket sale will go to the Wounded Warrior Project. "Founded in 2003, WWP’s purpose is to raise awareness and enlist the public’s aid for the needs of injured service members, to help injured service members aid and assist each other, and to provide unique, direct programs and services to meet their needs." If you would like to join Greystone for the evening or make a donation to the Wounded Warrior Project, visit the ticket table next week. See you there!

03-25-2013: Celebrating the Long Gray Line
This weekend the Greystone students who have earned appointments to the United States Military Academy and the Greystone staff enjoyed an evening of fine dining, good conversation, and excellent company at the 2013 West Point Founder's Day Dinner. Hosted by the West Point Society of South Texas, the evening was a great success. Ten of the sixteen students present that will be joining the West Point Class of 2017 were Greystoners! Looking sharp with fresh haircuts and a suit and tie, our students were well received by the West Point alumni who passed on their knowledge of the Long Gray Line to the next generation. Three speeches given by the oldest graduate present, the youngest graduate present, and Major General (Ret) Robert Mixon were inspiring to say the least. Our students left the evening with a sense of excitement about their next four years at West Point and their future careers. We look forward to seeing all of our West Point bound students swear in on July 1st!

03-25-2013: A Lesson On Leadership
The ultimate goal for Greystone is to produce young men and women who are scholars, athletes, and leaders prepared to take on the challenges of the academies and beyond. Part of the leadership preparation happens through the Klocko Leadership Lecture Series. Greystone invites speakers from all over the country to share the lessons they have learned over the years with the Greystone students. This year, Greystone was honored to feature Chief Master Sergeant Robert Gaylor as the designated speaker. Chief Gaylor was the fifth to earn the rank of Chief Master Sergeant of the Air Force - the highest possible rank for an enlisted member. After hearing him speak, it isn't difficult to figure out how he made it to the top. Chief Gaylor has an incredible presence that identifies him as a natural born leader. His presentation to the Greystone students and Kerrville community was highly entertaining but still led you to reflect on the overall message of the evening which was "Resilience", a new buzzword in the Air Force. According to Chief Gaylor, there are 14 "F-words" that will help you to become resilient. Some of the them include Family, Foolishness, Finances, Friends, and Fun! With each of these components in your life, you are able to bounce back and be resilient. Or as Chief Gaylor put it, "Fesilient" - the newest f-word on the list.
The Klocko Leadership Lecture Series is open to the public. Keep an eye out on the Greystone Calendar for more great events!

03-22-2013: Another Air Force Appointment!
Last night was another great evening at Greystone. Sam Chadwick received the phone call from his Congressman's office letting him know that he will be going to the Air Force Academy next year! After a long battle with DoDMERB trying to get a waiver, Sam can finally take a deep breath and relax because the battle has been won! Congratulations Sam. You will get to join the biggest Air Force class from Greystone to date. Enjoy your time there in the next four years becoming the great leader we know you are!
-
03-22-2013: Perseverance Pays Off!
Dealing with DoDMERB issues can be a confusing and frustrating experience. It's even more frustrating when DoDMERB issue isn't even a TRUE disqualifier. That has been the struggle this year for Claire Clark. She, however has handled it with patience, determination, and grace - all of which have paid off. Claire found out yesterday from her Congressman that she has EARNED her appointment to the Naval Academy! Everyone at Greystone knew that she belonged there and we're excited now that the academy has figured it out too. Congratulations Claire! We know that you are off to do great things as an officer in the United States Navy!
-
03-22-2013: Starting the Week off Right!
Today has been a great day for some of our students - packed with new appointments! Scarlett Marshall earned an appoinment to USMMA; Brandon Grice is going to USMA; Chris Cowen received an appointment from USNA; and both Phil Strunk and Liam Catoe have earned appointments to USAFA! For anyone who has been keeping track - that's three appointments each for Phil Strunk and Liam Catoe! This is a testament to the hard work and dedication they have put towards their goal of becoming an academy trained and educated leader. Congratulations all!
-
03-22-2013: Congratulations Greystone Alumni!
One word that you could use to describe most Greystone students is tenacious. They were turned down once, sometimes twice by the academies but were not willing to take no for an answer. They work hard in the classroom for the best grades, push themselves to the limit in morning physical training (PT), and abide by an Honor Code that represents the highest moral standards in order to stand out among the best and brightest young men and women in the U.S. One young man, Connor McLauchlan has had to go through the heart break of the Thin White Envelope for two years in a row - once as a high school senior and again as a Greystoner. Thanks to his tenacity however, he has finally received the good news that he waited so long to hear. Connor McLauchlan (Greystone Class of 2012) will be joining the USNA class of 2017! Congratulations Connor! We have faith that you will do great things at the academy and beyond.
-
03-22-2013: Our First Fly Girl!
The day has gotten off to a great start this morning. Scarlett Marshall has just received word that she has earned an appointment to USAFA! She immediately accepted the offer which will make her the first young woman from Greystone to go to the Air Force Academy. Congratulations Scarlett! We are so proud of you and excited to see all that you'll accomplish in Colorado Springs!
-
03-22-2013: Two More Appointments!
Congratulations go out to Michael Eller and Liam Catoe who both found out this weekend that they have earnedappointments to USMA at West Point! It seems like the USMA admissions staff have been very busy and for that, we are grateful. Keep up the hard work, Greystoners - it will pay off!

03-04-2013: See Greystone First-Hand
In February, Greystone held the first Candidate Weekend of the year, hosting four guests. The candidates were able to see exactly what life is like for a Greystoner in this program. They attended Schreiner University classes, worked out with the team in early morning PT, participated in Toastmasters (a public speaking organization), and ended the day with study hall. They also took meals in the Schreiner Dining Hall, participated in an official Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA), and enjoyed down time with the Greystone students. One candidate wrote to us after the weekend saying "Your program really seems to inspire people, including myself to be the best they can be and work as hard as they possibly can to achieve their goals." If this sounds like an opportunity that you are interested in, please click on the Candidate Weekend button to the right of this page and fill out a registration form. For more information on Candidate Weekend visits, please go to the "Visit Greystone" tab on the left or give us a call in the office at 830-896-6530!

Guess who just received a call from their senator with good news! Congratulations Thomas Parker who has EARNED his appointment to West Point! The first USMA appointment of the year. Way to go Parker. We can't wait to see you marching on The Plain next year!
-
03-04-2013: More Great News
Despite the rainy weather, today is still a great day. James Pazdral has EARNED his appointment to the Merchant Marine Academy at Kings Point and all four of our Falcon Foundation Scholars have received word of their appointment to the United States Air Force Academy! We all knew you could do it and we're so glad that the academies agree! Congratulations James Pazdral, Jeffrey Puhek, Jeffery Walton, Zach Eppinger, and Howlett Cohick - we have no doubt that you'll go on to do GREAT things!
-
02-20-2013: Greystone’s First Appointments!
Today was the first day in what we hope will be a long line of days of receiving great news. That news is that the first two Greystone appointments have been received! Nathan Guney from San Antonio received a call this morning from his Congressman informing him that his appointment to the United States Naval Academy was in the mail. And Phil Strunk from Chicago was told by his Senator this afternoon that he had earned an appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy. Congratulations Guney and Strunk! Be sure to start making your reservations for I-Day!
Keep an eye out for more stories about the Greystoners. With the outstanding students in this year’s class, there’s sure to be a lot of great news heading our way!

02-20-2013: A Day to Celebrate
Yesterday, in addition to hearing about Walton's appointment to the Air Force Academy, the class had the chance to celebrate their accomplishments in academics from last semester. Thirty-six Greystoners were inducted into the Alpha Lambda Delta honor society last night. ALD is a national honor society for first year students that "encourages superior academic achievement." The students were also recognized by the university at the annual President's List Dinner. To be on the President's List, you must have a 3.7 or above cumulative GPA for the semester. Every single Greystoner was in attendance for dinner that evening either to be recognized or to show support for their teammates. Thirty-two students on the President's List is quite an accomplishment - one that the students are hoping to repeat in this spring semester. Congratulations to the Class of 2013! You've done fantastic work so far!
-
02-14-2013: Great News on Valentine's Day!
We've just heard from Jeffery Walton that he has received his appointment to the United States Air Force Academy! He's the first Greystoner of the year to earn an Air Force appointment. That sure beats any other Valentine's Day present he could have received! Congratulations Walton! Be sure to pack your cold weather gear for Colorado Springs!
-
02-14-2013: Congratulations Chris Cowen!
Chris Cowen has earned his appointment to the United States Merchant Marine Academy! Congratulations Chris. Your hard work has paid off. Like Scott, Chris has also been in contact with the football coach at Kings Point so we may get to watch the two of them playing for the KP Midshipmen next year! What a great day for Greystone.
-
02-14-2013: Ryan Scott to USMMA!
Congratulations to Ryan Scott who received his Letter of Assurance to Kings Point this week. His late nights of studying, writing papers, and finishing applications have been fruitful. We may even get to watch Scott play football at USMMA next year! Stay tuned to hear about more appointments heading our way!

02-14-2013: What Team Really Means
When you talk to a Greystone student about the program one of the words that usually comes up is "team". Building up the team to work together is one of the reasons that the students are so successful both here and at the academies. By working through the challenges that Greystone presents together, they create friendships that will last a lifetime - a valuable asset when entering an academy. Once there, they have a support system that will help them get through the tough times. Just this week, we received a picture from a group of Greystone alumni from the class of 2011 at West Point's Yearling Winter Weekend. Two years after their time at Greystone, they still have a strong bond. And that's true for Greystone students at all of the academies.
-
02-14-2013: The Most Wonderful Time of the Year!
Some say that Christmas is their favorite season, but at Greystone we're fond of the spring semester because that's when the appointments and scholarships start rolling in. Yesterday, Phil Strunk received the news that he has earned his appointment to the Naval Academy and early this morning, we get to add Liam Catoe to the list of academy appointees. Catoe got word from his congressman's office this morning that he earned his appointment to the Naval Academy as well! Congratulations Phil and Liam! The hard work has paid off and you're the one that has made your dream a reality. Congratulations again!
-
02-04-2013: Looking Forward to 2014
In the fall, most of Greystone’s busy schedule revolves around nomination and academy applications. However, in the spring the focus shifts to the prospective students for next year’s class. Already we’ve had two high school seniors come by to visit the campus for a day and in a couple of weeks we will host the first Greystone Candidate Weekend for the year! Visiting Greystone and participating in Candidate Weekends is truly the best way to see what Greystone is all about. You’ll be immersed in a typical day on campus for one of our students and get to experience exactly what we’re talking about when we say that Greystone is a team effort. If you’re interested in seeing Greystone in person, click on the Candidate Weekend button to the right to learn more!

01-22-2013: Greystone Success in Numbers
Success at Greystone can be measured in many different ways, but the easiest to pinpoint are the success stories where we can look at the numbers. This year, the numbers are looking very good. The class of 2013 is the biggest class to date with 43 students and together as a class they have set another record of the highest semester GPA. At the end of the fall semester, the class average was a 3.81 on a 4.0 scale! 22 Students had a perfect 4.0 GPA; 32 Greystoners were included on the President's List (GPA of 3.7 or above); and 9 students finished on the Dean's List (GPA of 3.3 to 3.69). These numbers are a testament to the hard work that each of the students have put in this semester in the class room and study hall. With this kind of success here at Schreiner, their first year at the academies should be a little bit easier (the course schedules for Greystone are modeled after schedules for 1st year academy students).
Another impressive number for this year’s class is 100%. That’s right, for the ninth year in a row 100% of the Greystone students have received at least 1 nomination to an academy. As part of the Greystone program, each student was responsible for writing a personal statement, goals and ambitions statement, and a resume that facilitates the application process. With those documents in hand, the students are able to answer most questions on the application. They were also required to go through Greystone’s Murder Board, a mock interview that is similar to what they would face during the nomination application process with their congressmen or senators. Combined with their hard work in their academics and physical training, these elements of the Greystone program have helped students EARN their nominations to the academies.
In nine Greystone classes 99% of Greystone graduates were accepted into military officer programs and 93% of those graduates earned academy appointments. These are statistics that are unmatched by any other military prep program in the country. If you are dedicated to your goal of becoming a military officer and would like to accept the challenge of a year at Greystone, please contact the office at 830-896-6530 for more information!

01-22-2013: The Academies Visit Greystone
The past couple of weeks at Greystone have been packed full of visitors. The first representative on campus was Lieutenant Corinne Plummer with the Coast Guard Academy. LT Plummer gave a great presentation to our students about everything USCGA had to offer. We've had many students who weren't considering Coast Guard as an option now applying for it as one of their top 3 choices!
Our next guest was CJ Burgin with West Point. As the MALO (Military Academy Liaison Officer) in the area, CJ conducted interviews twice in one week for students who are applying to USMA.
CAPT Ed Wallace with the USNA Foundation followed soon after. While here with us, Captain Wallace presented the USNA Foundation sponsored students with a lapel pin in the shape of the academy crest. He also gave a presentation to the entire Greystone class explaining the incredible career paths that were opened up to him after graduating from the Naval Academy.
In the weekend following, seven former Greystoners - five from USMMA and two from UT came out to visit with the Greystone Staff and current Greystone students. The USMMA midshipmen also gave a presentation highlighting the options available at Kings Point before finding time to reminisce about their year as a Greystoner.
The last group of visitors came to Greystone from the USAFA Falcon Foundation. In the second week, Greystone welcomed General Kelley, General Shirley, and Colonel Henricks on campus. General Kelley presented his Falcon Foundation sponsored students with a lapel pin and met with many Greystoners who are interested in the Air Force Academy. General Shirley was given a personal tour by two of our students. And Colonel Henricks, who flew his own plane down to Kerrville took Jeffery Walton, a Falcon Foundation student with him on flying tour of Kerrville.
Now for those of you keeping track, we were visited by representatives of all 5 federal service academies in the span of 2 weeks! It was a busy, but rewarding time - just another typical Greystone October.
-
01-22-2013: Greystone on the SU Campus
Community service is a major part of the Greystone program. It is one of the components that builds great leaders. This past week ten of our Greystone students took part in a community service event to raise awareness for Spina Bifida. Spina Bifida is a developmental congenital disorder resulting in abnormalities in the spinal cord. These abnormalities can cause weakness in the legs or even paralysis. To raise awareness for Spina Bifida, the Schreiner University Health and Wellness Center put together a Wheelchair Basketball Tournament.
Students who participated were strapped into a wheelchair in order to limit the use of their legs while playing. The Greystoners did a great job in representing themselves on campus by providing enough students for 2 full teams for this event. It was clear by their expressions that the students enjoyed the new challenge added to a familiar game. With these special rules, they learned a little bit about the limitations faced when living with Spina Bifida. It also made them realize that there are many possibilities for people living with the disorder. In all, it was a great learning experience for everyone there!

12-11-2012: Army/Navy Tailgating
No football game is complete without a decent tailgate party and that is definitely true for the Army/Navy Classic. For the fifth year in a row, Greystone has hosted a tailgate party for this famous game. This year the venue was the Clubhouse at Comanche Trace overlooking the best Hill Country scenery that Kerrville has to offer. However, who wants to look at scenery when the game is going on? Students, Board Members, and friends of Greystone gathered around the TV, cheering on their favorite team while enjoying typical tailgate food - sliders, hot dogs, homemade potato chips and as an added bonus, Blue Bell ice cream with giant chocolate chip cookies. Dressed in the colors of their favorite team, everyone there enjoyed some good food, conversation, a little bit of friendly rivalry, and push-ups. Just like the cadets and midshipmen at the academies, the Greystoners did push-ups for every touch down and field goal. They were even joined by Colonel Reichert and a few of the other guests! The game itself was an exciting one to the very end. It came down to the last 2 minutes of play but ultimately resulted in a win for Navy. Next year, you'll be sure to find us glued to the TV to see if Army can break Navy's winning streak! We hope to see you there.
-
12-10-2012: 1st Annual Greystone Hammer Bowl
The Army-Navy game is one of the most traditional and enduring rivalries in college football. To join in on the fun, Greystone has put together its own version of the Army-Navy game called The Hammer Bowl. In the Hammer Bowl, students seeking an appointment to West Point or Air Force were pitted against Naval Academy and Marine Corps hopefuls in a flag football game. The game ball was escorted to the field by the Kerrville Police Department with lights flashing and sirens blaring and was received by Kerr County Judge Pat Tinley. Judge Tinley also officiated the coin toss with the new Greystone Challenge Coin. Michael Eller and Brandon Grice (both West Point candidates) provided commentary for the game – biased commentary, but it was clear that everyone enjoyed it. At halftime, we received a special visit from Colonel Claus who was there to grant a few Christmas wishes and to voice a couple of his own. In those 60 minutes of play, every student had their time on the field to shine and in the end the Navy/Marine team earned the win with a score of 48-40. The Sledge Hammer Trophy was presented to the winning team who will decorate it and keep it until the Greystone Class of 2014 faces off. Join us next year for a continuation of the newest Greystone tradition at the 2nd Annual Greystone Hammer Bowl!

12-10-2012: Hatchett Character Lecture
Students who successfully complete the Greystone program finish as scholars, athletes, and leaders. To develop the last third of this equation - leaders, the Greystone students attend a Character Development and Leadership Training course on Saturday mornings. To supplement these classes, Greystone also hosts the Hatchett Character Lecture Series. Dr. Ron Hatchett is a graduate of the United States Air Force Academy and a recently retired member of the Schreiner University faculty. In his extremely popular Character Lecture Series, Dr. Hatchett relays unbelievable stories of heroism, bravery, and leadership - all indicators of good character. The students were attentive as they listened to Dr. Hatchett, taking in the details of situations they may face in their future careers. Each student left the presentation with a deepened understanding of their calling to serve as officers in the military and an appreciation for those that have served before them. We look forward to hearing more from Dr. Hatchett in his next visit with us. It will surely be an excellent presentation.

12-07-2012: Setting the Standard
Each of the federal service academies has their own version of an Honor Code and Standards of Conduct that dictate the expectations placed upon their cadets and midshipmen. Here at Greystone, the students have written and presented their own Honor Code/Standards of Conduct based on those at the academies. The students have organized two committees to oversee the enforcement of these new standards that will keep them accountable to their teammates.
Honor Code
Greystone students are people of integrity. We strive for excellence at all times. As aspiring officers, we will live by a higher standard and abide by the code that we have set forth:
- I will not lie; I will ensure that the whole truth is known.
- I will not cheat; I will not act dishonestly to in any way gain an unfair advantage.
- I will not steal; I will not take, for my own use or possession, anything without consent of the owner.
- Nor, will I tolerate any of those who do.
With my word as my bond, I will uphold this code and everything it stands for to the best of my ability.Standards of Conduct
We will not intentionally engage in, nor tolerate, any activity that could bring discredit on ourselves, our class, or our university and could jeopardize our academy appointment. This includes, but is not limited to:
- Illegal consumption of alcohol.
- Use or possession of illegal drugs and/or abuse of controlled substances.
- Engage in any sexual activity that would void our appointment to an academy.
- Tolerate any unwanted verbal or physical advances of a sexual or threatening nature.
- As a representative class of Greystone, Schreiner University, and the academies, I will treat everyone with dignity and respect. We, as the Greystone Class of 2013, agree to all of the above statements and will hold ourselves, and each other, accountable.

12-07-2012: Army/Navy Spirit Week
As we get closer to the traditional Army/Navy Game the Greystoners have really let their true colors shine - the colors of their favorite academy! This week has been full of friendly pranks between the Army/Air Force candidates and the Navy/Coast Guard/Merchant Marine candidates. There's been a lot of furniture moved, more than a few cans of shaving cream used, and a beach scene placed right in the middle of a room. It was a great way to take a study break with finals just around the corner. The students were excited to let loose their mischievous sides and get a bit creative. And an additional bonus is that they have plenty of ideas for next year when they're at the academies!

11-20-2012: Getting in the Holiday Spirit
The holiday season is nearly here and you would think that it would mean things would start to wind down, but you would be mistaken. The show never really stops around here. In the short two-day school week before the students leave for Thanksgiving, the schedule has been full. The week started off with a Candidate Fitness Assessment (CFA) at 0545, then transitioned into volunteering with the San Antonio Food Bank. The students unloaded and distributed enough food to feed 140 local families! Joining us during this event was Cadet Hollis Young. The original purpose for Cadet Young’s visit was to sit down with the Greystone students to discuss life at West Point and to answer any questions they might have. However, as soon as he saw the students working with the food bank truck, he jumped right in to help. Cadet Young rolled up the sleeves of his West Point uniform and began unloading boxes without hesitation. The Greystoners were able to see first-hand, the kind of character that is expected of a cadet at West Point.
After all of the food had been given out and Cadet Young left to spend Thanksgiving Break with his family, the Greystoners switched gears from Thanksgiving to Christmas. In the past week they collected over 200 pounds of supplies to fill care packages for Marines in Afghanistan. 2nd Lieutenant Tony Fazio is a Greystone graduate from the class of 2007 and a USNA graduate from the class of 2011. This year, his soon to be brother-in-law, Josh Calderon is a student at Greystone. Josh (with a little help) organized the entire drive from beginning to end in order to send care packages to Tony and his squad for Christmas. It just goes to show you that the fun never stops at Greystone!

11-19-2012: Friends of Greystone
Greystone has a full time staff that is dedicated to the success of the students; however this program would not be the same without the care and help that comes from the outside community. We call these volunteers the Friends of Greystone a.k.a. "The FoG". One such individual who has been a vital part of the Greystone program is Judge Pat Tinley. Judge Tinley serves the community as the Kerr County Judge and serves Greystone as a source of good advice and a mentor. Each year, the Greystone students write an Honor Code and Standard of Conduct that guides their actions during their year at Schreiner and beyond. Judge Tinley has presided over this event for the past five years prompting questions from the audience and challenging students to fully develop their thoughts on what it means to be a person of good character and morals. This year as a “thank you” for all that he has done, the Greystone students presented Judge Tinley with a brand new Greystone challenge coin. Challenge coins are a military tradition usually given by unit commanders to recognize a special achievement by a member of the unit or exchanged in recognition of a visit to an organization. It is our hope that visitors who receive a Greystone challenge coin will display it proudly in order to continue this time honored military tradition.

11-02-2012: September Birthday Bash
Here at Greystone, we want our students to feel at home. One way to do that is by celebrating birthdays! Now, our schedule won't allow us to throw 43 separate parties, but what we do instead is just as fun. Recently, we celebrated all of our August and September birthdays with a barbeque.
Two of our students manned the grill, cooking enough burgers and hot dogs to feed 43 hungry teenagers plus staff, board members, and other friends of Greystone. All of the students were glad to have the opportunity to relax and just enjoy each other's company along with some good food. The birthday cupcakes were provided by a Greystone Board Member, Nancy Dickinson and her husband, Phil and were absolutely delicious! Before the cupcakes could be consumed, a beautiful rendition of the Birthday Song was sung and favorite birthday memories were shared.
In all, it was a much-needed, relaxing evening that facilitated good fellowship and laughter. Stay tuned for next month's Birthday Barbeque/Halloween Party!

10-30-2012: Camp Flaming Arrow Challenge Course
On Saturday, September 22nd the Greystone students were given the opportunity to show just what they're made of. They participated in both a high ropes course and a low ropes course that put their leadership, determination, and teamwork to the test. The fantastic staff at YMCA Camp Flaming Arrow in Hunt, TX challenged the students to push themselves in order to complete each obstacle, some of which were 40 feet in the air!
In the high ropes course, the students learned the value of encouraging your teammates and attempting tasks that you didn't believe you were capable of. And in the low ropes, they found out just how important good communication is when it comes to working as a team.
Then at the end of the day, after hours of working hard and playing hard, the Greystone students took a pledge to each other. Through this pledge, each student committed themselves to the betterment of the team. Together, they will be able to achieve more than they ever could on their own. And together, they will strive for the ultimate goal: 43 for 43!

10-26-2012: Greystone Volunteering
The first volunteering opportunity for the Greystone students this year was completed at the Kerrville VA Hospital. Every year, American flags are put up for special holidays including Memorial Day and Veteran's Day in order to honor our nation's military - past, present, and future. The Greystone students were asked to help pick up the flags now that the holiday has passed and did so in record time. They were able to pick up, fold, and store all of the flags and flag poles in 18 minutes and 14 seconds! Now that's great teamwork.
-
10-19-2012: River Fun
The life of a Greystone student is busy, busy, busy. Between studying, working out, and volunteering it's hard to imagine that they have time to have fun. Fortunately, the Greystone family is large and generous. Thanks to the kind heart of Virginia Spikes, one of our board members, the students had a chance to get off campus for an evening and relax along the Guadalupe River. Mrs. Spikes opened up her beautiful home on the river to all of the students, giving them a chance to swim, kayak, or even fish. She also cooked a delicious dinner that satisfied all 43 students and the staff - no easy task. Evenings like this remind our students that when you work hard, you also get to play hard! Thank you again, Mrs. Spikes.

10-01-2012: Class Leadership Selected for Greystone at Schreiner University
HILL COUNTRY COMMUNITY JOURNAL
September 19, 2012
The leadership for the Greystone Class of 2013 has been announced by CDR David Bailey, Executive Director of the Greystone Program at Schreiner University.
"Phillip Strunk of Chicago has been selected for Class President. He stood out among his peers. An articulate young man, he is motivated to lead the Greystone organization and help his teammates achieve their dreams of earning appointments to one of the five Service Academies (Army, Navy, Air Force, Coast Guard or Merchant Marine)," said Bailey.
"I'm very excited about the opprotunity I have to lead this class. It's an humbling responsibility as each of us strive to maximize our year at Schreiner University with the ultimate goal of earning a Congressional nomination and appointment to a service academy," said Strunk.
Assisting Strunk in class leadership are Josh Calderon of Yorktown, VA, Vice President; Sterling Hall of Sonora, TX, Secretary; Michael Eller of San Diego, Treasurer; and Scarlett Marshall of Fair Oaks Ranch, TX, Schreiner Student Senate Representative.
"This year's Greystone class has 43 students, the largest ever. We have 19 students from Texas and 24 from throughout the rest of the country. We have students from New York, Virginia and Florida on the East Coast to California and Oregon on the West Coast," concluded Bailey.
Greystone Preparatory School at Schreiner University is a unique program that combines intense service academy preparation with a challenging university education for high school graduates committed to earning their appointments to one of the five Federal Service Academies (Army at West Point, Navy at Annapolis, Air Force at Colorado Springs, Coast Guard at New London, CT and Merchant Marine at Kings Point, NY). In the last seven years, 100 percent of all Greystone graduates earned at least one Congressional nomination, 99 percent were accepted into military officer programs and 88 percent of those graduates earned academy appointments. This success rate remains unmatched by any other academy preparatory program in the nation! -
09-25-2012: Congratulations to the Greystone Class of 2012!
Although our time together has come to an end in Kerrville and you are about to take your next step to an academy or college/university ROTC experience, we will continue this journey together - as a team and as a family! The bonds of friendship enabled this team team to excel as scholars, athletes and leaders while you were engaged in your Schreiner University and Greystone challenges and it is because of these bonds that this team will continue to pursue excellence wherever you go! On behalf of the Greystone Staff, Board of Directors, Advisory Board and Schreiner University, we wish the Greystone Class of 2012 Fair Winds and Following Seas - and God Speed!

- General Omar BradleyAnnouncements:
1. Navy ROTC Scholarship Presentation: On Wednesday, 5 September, representatives from the US Navy ROTC department will present a briefing on Navy ROTC scholarships. The briefing will be conducted at 1600 in Ballroom #3 at the CACC. All students who have designated Navy ROTC as their alternate source of commission (back-up plan) are required to attend and take advantage of this opportunity to apply for a full Navy scholarship. If you have questions as to whether you should attend or not, see LTC Reichert.
2. Introduction to Toastmasters: All Greystone students will attend the introduction to Toastmasters conducted on Friday, 7 September at 1230 in the River Room of the CACC. Thereafter, Toastmasters will meet each Friday at 1230. All Greystone students will participate in Toastmasters to refine speaking and presentation skills. Various members of the Schreiner faculty and staff, as well as the Kerrville community, will serve as mentors and evaluators within the program to provide feedback and advice on improving communication skills.
3. Blue Jean Friday: This Friday, we will commence the Greystone “Blue Jean Friday.” On Fridays, Greystone students are permitted to wear blue jeans to class. Jeans must be free from holes and not overly faded or worn. Students must wear a collared shirt, tucked in with a belt. Students are permitted to wear running shoes as long as they are clean and presentable.
Reminders:
1. Special Chit Request Submissions: Now that we have an established student leadership structure, ensure that all special request chits are forwarded through your chain of command. As we develop our OrgSync capability, we will transition all chit submissions to that system.
2. Sickness Prevention: We are beginning to see our first signs of upper respiratory and common cold issues among the Greystone class. This will continue through the fall, at which point we will enter the flu season this winter. All students are encouraged to drink plenty of fluids, increase your intake of Vitamin C, and keep your hands washed. If you feel that you are coming down with an illness, alert a staff member so that we can assess the situation and direct you toward medical care when necessary. With your help, we can keep the team healthy!
Recognition:
1. Leadership Positions: Congratulations to all newly-designated leaders and student officers within the Greystone Class of 2013. As previously indicated, positions will rotate periodically throughout the semester and academic year, so take advantage of every opportunity to develop and refine your leadership skills. Those that were not designated in this initial leadership roster will have ample opportunity to rotate through leadership positions later in the semester. Everyone will have an opportunity to serve and develop their leadership abilities.
2. Camping Trip Recognition: We would like to recognize the members of the Eagle Scout committee who organized and led us during the weekend camping trip. Sam Chadwick did an outstanding job as the group leader, and he was assisted by a motivated group of Scouts who worked together to ensure we had a great camping experience. Jeffery Walton also made a significant contribution by stepping up to handle various logistics responsibilities during the trip. Well done Scouts!

1. Nomination Paperwork Procedures: The staff has established a procedure for students to have nomination and application paperwork reviewed and approved for submission. This procedure must be followed to ensure the orderly flow of paperwork and administrative actions, and to ensure that your paperwork is prepared for submission with no defects or shortcomings. The procedure involves a three step process. First, paperwork is reviewed by CAPT Vortmann or LTC Reichert. Next, Mrs. Bailey reviews the paperwork. Finally, CDR Bailey will review the paperwork and give it his final approval. Skipping any one of these steps will result in the student being sent back to step number one in the process. In accordance with Greystone policy, students are reminded that no paperwork is submitted to outside agencies without the approval of CDR Bailey. The staff will also establish a schedule for students to submit paperwork prioritized based on submission deadlines from your respective members of congress. Once published, students are directed not to schedule times for paperwork review until your specified timeframe. We must follow the established prioritized timeline to ensure that all students meet congressional deadlines for the submission of nomination requests.
2. Camp Flaming Arrow Camping Trip: We will conduct a camping trip at Camp Flaming Arrow from Friday, 1SEPT to Sunday, 3 SEPT. Flaming Arrow is a YMCA summer camp located near Hunt, Texas, approximately 20 miles west of Kerrville along the Guadalupe River. The YMCA of Greater San Antonio was kind enough to offer us the use of their facilities during this weekend and our upcoming high and low ropes course scheduled for 22 SEPT in exchange for a service project to be conducted early in the Spring semester. During the trip, the Greystone office will not be manned, and parents can reach staff members on their cell numbers if necessary, including Commander Bailey at 443-822-8918 or Lieutenant Colonel Reichert at 936-205-0568.
3. Labor Day Weekend Schedule: Following the camping trip, Greystone will observe Labor Day Weekend on Sunday and Monday (2 – 3 SEPT). There will be no Study Hall on Sunday night and no PT on Monday morning. No classes are scheduled for Schreiner University on Monday as well. A Weekend Duty Coordinator is designated for Sunday and Monday as indicated in the duty roster above. The Main Office Watch will resume on Monday evening, as well as Study Hall. Students are encouraged to use this time to rest, do laundry, and catch up on their studies.
4. Sports Injury Prevention Presentation: Representatives from the university health and fitness center will present a class on sports injury prevention at 1630 on Tuesday, 4 September in the CACC Theater. All Greystone students without a class conflict are required to attend. The presentation will focus on the prevention and treatment of common running-related injuries, especially shin splints.
Reminders:
1. Bible Study: We had a great turnout for our first Bible Study last week, with excellent and thoughtful participation by all who attended. We will continue our Bible Study series on Tuesday, 4 SEPT at 1800 in Room106 of the Moody Science Building. All interested students are invited to attend.
2. Room Inspection Patterns: Room inspection results this week were not as favorable as the previous week. By now, you all know the standards. Although not nearly as stringent as the standards for room appearance at the service academies, our standards are meant to maintain cleanliness and organization in your living areas, as well as to stress the attention to detail you will encounter at the academies. Pay attention to the simple things, such as ensuring your blinds are open and at half-mast, vacuuming rugs, keeping refrigerators and microwaves clean (inside and out), and organizing items on shelves and in closets. Further issues with inspection performance will result in weekend inspections, so tighten up.
3. Safe Driving Reminder (Repeat): The school year has started in Kerrville, so students and staff must be aware of school zones located throughout the Kerrville area. Of note, fines increase for those caught using cell phones in school zones, so all drivers must remain vigilant. Greystone students are directed to refrain from using cell phones to talk or text while driving anywhere in the Kerrville area. This is to ensure your safety, and to serve as a positive example within the community. All are encouraged to extend this practice to any area while driving.

– President John F. KennedyAnnouncements:
1. Presentation by Kerrville Police Chief: Friend of Greystone Academy and Kerrville Chief of Police John Young will present a briefing to the Greystone Class of 2013 at 1600 on Wednesday, 29 August in the CACC Theater. All Greystone students without a class conflict will attend. As he does for each new Greystone class, Chief Young will present an informative briefing concerning safety and crime prevention in the Kerrville area.
2. Holiday Travel Scheduling: Schreiner University has a Fall Break scheduled form 6 – 9 October. Academy-sponsored Greystone students will be allowed to depart on 5 October following their last class of that day. Non-sponsored students must remain on campus to complete an SAT exam scheduled on 6 October. The exam will be complete by 1430. Following this exam, non-sponsored students will be allowed to depart. Greystone will not be providing transportation to the San Antonio Airport for Fall Break. If making flight arrangements, be advised that students cannot arrange for a flight departing any less than 2.5 hours after their last class or commitment to allow for travel time and check-in procedures at the airport. Students must be back on campus by 1700 on Tuesday, 9 October. During Fall Break, the dorm and the dining facility will remain open, and we will schedule voluntary activities for students who remain on campus.
Thanksgiving Break is scheduled for 21- 25 November. Greystone students can depart following their last class on 20 November. Greystone will provide transportation to and from the San Antonio Airport for Thanksgiving Holiday. The van will depart from Greystone on the afternoon of 20 November. If you wish to use the Greystone-provided transportation, do not schedule a flight departure time prior to 1500 on that day. Typically, some professors cancel their classes on 20 November, but do not count on this happening when making flight arrangements. Students must return to campus by 1700 on Sunday, 25 November. Therefore, schedule return flights to arrive at San Antonio no later than 1500. During this break, the dorms and dining facilities will be closed.
For Christmas Break, the last day of Final Exams is scheduled for 12 December, with the last exam completed by 1230. Greystone will provide transportation to the airport starting on 12 December. Individual student exam schedules will vary, and some students may be finished with exams prior to 12 December. Again, do not schedule a departure flight earlier than 1500 if you wish to use the Greystone-provided transportation. If a student wishes to depart campus prior to 12 December, Greystone will not provide transportation to the airport. Students must return to campus by 1700 on 15 January. Again, schedule return flights to arrive no later than 1500. For any holiday transportation not provided by Greystone, students can make arrangements with classmates or contact Hill Country Limousine Service at 830-896-1429.
3. Bible Study: We will begin our Bible Study series on Tuesday, 28 August at 1800 in Room106 of the Moody Science Building. All interested students are invited to attend. During this initial meeting, we will discuss topics and provide an overview of the series. Those interested in attending will be excused from Study Hall during this time, but must make up for the missed study time in advance. The class will meet each Tuesday evening at 1800 throughout the semester.
Reminders:
1. Room Inspection Reminders: Based on the first series of room inspections, the class’ overall performance has been good, with only minor deficiencies noted. As we progress into our full inspection schedule, the staff has identified a few areas for improvement and clarification. First, ensure that the main entrance to the suite remains locked at all times. Only the doors leading into the individual rooms will be unlocked and open for inspection. The staff will use a pass key to gain entrance into the suite, so keep it locked for security reasons. Ensure that mirrors on the doors to the bathroom and on the medicine cabinets remain clean. Ensure that windows are kept clean both inside and out. Finally, continue to improve on organization and alignment of clothing and items within drawers.
2. Health update: Continue to minimize the risk of West Nile Virus by using insect repellent before going outside, and make a conscious effort to close your suite doors leading to the outside. As long as the door is open, you are providing mosquitoes with unfettered access to you. Use the spray whenever you leave the room and make sure to close your doors. We have also provided citronella candles for use in our outdoor sitting areas, so use them whenever you gather in these areas.
3. Safe Driving Reminder: The school year has started in Kerrville, so students and staff must be aware of school zones located throughout the Kerrville area.
4. Greystone Facebook Page: For students and parents, please continue to visit the Greystone Facebook page and “like” us whenever you visit, as this enables us to keep track of the number of visitors to the site. We will update the site throughout the year with pictures, comments, etc.

3. Thanks to Jesse Austel for coordinating an arrangement with the Mi Mesa restaurant to provide breakfast tacos at a reduced price for the Greystone class. This arrangement will be beneficial as we rely on Mi Mesa to feed the class during morning activities when the Schreiner Dinning Facility is not available. Well done Jesse!
Note: The drastic increase in consumption of cupcakes and breakfast tacos will be taken into account when planning morning PT sessions in the future, so enjoy!!!

03-26-2012: Founder's Dinner
Saturday, March 24, 2012 – San Antonio Texas:
West Point Society of South Texas hosts an annual dinner event in honor of Founder’s Day, the day West Point was created. Two Greystone Students, Allie Baker of New York and Tim Nosco of Ohio, and many Greystone staff including COL Bill Crum, USAF (Ret) USMA ’56 and Mrs. Crum; CAPT Tom Vortmann, SC, USN (Ret); CDR Dave Bailey, USN (Ret) and Mrs. Bailey; and LTC Rittenhouse, USA (Ret) and Mrs. Rittenhouse traveled to the San Antonio Country club for dinner and experienced an event-filled evening.
C.J. Burgin, West Point’s local admission liaison, sent an invite all candidates in his territory who have received an offer of admission. The Greystone students had an opportunity to meet a handful of their future classmates in the USMA Class of 2016.
After meeting each other, the students were introduced to West Point graduate of ’76, Lieutenant General Guy Swan, and West Point’s Command Sargent Major, Todd Burnett. CSM Burnett spoke briefly about the Beast Barracks summer and about his experiences as the new West Point Command Sargent Major.

All the guests found their seats and the toasting began. One toast in particular was given to an empty table; it was a toast to the men and women who have given their lives to their country. Some other toasts were to the Army, the Core, and West Point’s Sister Service Academies. A high-quality dinner followed, consisting of sliced roast beef sirloin tender with mushroom sauce, bacon and cheddar au gratin potatoes and broccoli; for dessert, Peppermint Gold Bricks with chocolate drizzled over the ice cream.
For the rest of the evening, many West Point graduates gave speeches. The guest speaker, however, was not a graduate of West Point, but he is a member of the West Point community. Command Sargent Major Todd Burnett gave a presentation on a few of West Point’s immediate goals. He touched upon the USMAPS facilities, dorm renovation plans, beating Navy and even the importance of combat engineers.
Ultimately, it was an exciting evening and it was a great opportunity to meet extraordinary people.

Back-up Plans:
• Nick Halle received notice that he has been admitted to The University of Kansas!Announcements:
1. God Speed to Staff Sergeant Rodney Baltrip, USAF:
Javaughn's father, SGT Baltrip deployed this past weekend for Manas Air Base near Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The installation opened 2001 to support military operations to help bring security and stability to Afghanistan. Kyrgyzstan is north of Afghanistan and shares its eastern border with China. The Air Base's Transit Center at Manas is a transportation and logistics hub at Manas International Airport, near Bishkek, the capital of Kyrgyzstan. The host unit is the 376th Air Expeditionary Wing. The wing's around-the-clock missions include aerial refueling of coalition aircraft, airlift of supplies and equipment, movement of coalition personnel and strengthening of local partnerships. There are approximately 1,500 U.S. military and U.S. contractors and 700 Kyrgyz partner contractor personnel working at the Transit Center. The wing maintains and operates the Transit Center's KC-135 Stratotanker aircraft and the 817th Air Expeditionary Group owns, maintains and operates the center's C-17 Globemaster III aircraft.
A Greystone team needs to be created for organizing a community-wide drive for Care Packages for Staff Sergeant Baltrip and his units. Who’s in charge?
Please keep SGT Baltrip and his family in your thoughts and prayers as he joins his fellow Americans who deploy in the defense of our country.
2. Spring Break:
How can you best maximize your time during Spring Break? Rather than a few days at the beach (without getting wet) or at the ski slopes (where you've already decided not to ski or snowboard), what about a road trip to one or more of the Academies? As you may know, Howlett Cohick and his Dad visited USAFA this past weekend where he found out that Admissions did not have any record of his grades from the University. Fortunately Cohick had that all-important list he has been keeping of important contacts he has been making during his application process. He was able provide the name of the individual (and the date) who confirmed all his paperwork was in. With this, a simple correction to Cohick's file was made. Suppose Cohick did not keep this all-important log? Suppose he chose to take the weekend (read that spring break) off and go fishing? Suppose …!3. Recycling:
We're getting some great kudos about the amount of material we are recycling. As a reminder, items that can be recycled include:
• Plastics: soft drink and water bottles, milk, juice and detergent containers•
• Aluminum cans
• Paper: newspapers, magazines, copy paper
• Cardboard:
• Glass bottles and containersUnacceptable items include:
• No Styrofoam containers, paper towels, facial tissue, toilet paper, plastic bags, wax-coated cartons or food/waste of any type.4. Big events Tuesday and Wednesday evenings:
Ensure you have the proper coat, pressedshirt, tie and shined shoes ready to go. Fresh haircuts. Name tags. Picture opportunities for home town papers ... and the Academies.5. Toastmaster Winners:
Every meeting is improving! Think back at the beginning of the fall semester as you were becoming acquainted with your fellow Greystoners, classes, ECAs and those very important Saturday mornings . . . each and every one of you has made positive and remarkable strides!Last Saturday’s Toastmaster Winners:
Best Speaker: Sohrob
Best Table Topics Speaker: Sohrob
Best Evaluator: Gerrit6. Security:
This past week a MAC Powerbook was stolen from the lawn in front of Greystone. It was left unintended for less than a couple of minutes while the owner ran inside the RA's apartment. Let this be a warning to all Greystoners:• Strongly suggest you lock your suite when no one's inside - especially if all hands are off to the Rodeo or at the Mountaineer Center for a PRT.
• If you're not taking your wallet with you, it's best to put it in your closet or one of your drawers. You have no need to worry about other Greystoners, but you never know who might amber by, see both vans gone and no one milling around the building and decide to visit one or more of the rooms.Scheduled Events:

1. Wait Listings*:
Trent Pache received notification that he is wait listed at USMA!
Chris Croushore received notification that he is wait listed at USMA!* What is the National Waiting List? The candidate is fully qualified. Chances are there is a candidate from your district who was ranked higher than you on the list provided to the academy by the nomination source. Bottom line, it’s a numbers game! So now, we get busy! Continue to update your file with your Admissions Officer with any new awards (Alpha Lambda Delta), LORs, improved SAT scores, 4-week grades will go out to the academies on 17 February. DO NOT BE AFRAID TO CALL YOUR REGIONAL DIRECTOR! This person is your biggest advocate while you are on the Wait List. This person needs to know YOU WANT TO GO TO THE ACADEMY!! Tenacity and Perseverance …
2. From your Honor Committee:
This Thursday marks the deadline for professors to turn in four-week grades for the freshmen. Many of us still have tests to take and papers to turn in. Please remember to stay on top of your work, and if you fall behind, then ask for help! There are 24 other Stoners here who can help you. Asking for help is better than making an irrational decision and cheating. Please do not throw all of last semester's hard work away by taking the easy way out!Honor Committee Quote of the Week: "All good is hard. All evil is easy. Dying, losing, cheating, and mediocrity is easy. Stay away from easy."---Scott Alexander
Thank you for your help!
Very Respectfully,
Chris Croushore
